that the bonds between us

in the world’s eyes, Lord,
give us the words
that speak to the heart,
that reveal your love,
that illuminate the darkness
and shine your light
into the souls of all
with whom we have to do.

may we encounter you;
in the midst of our
concerns and preoccupations,
apprehend us and reveal to us
your presence and your purposes.
Give us courage and faith
to reveal your kingdom to all,
powerful or powerless,
in word and deed.

fill us with your Spirit and work within us,
to ensure that we are never a church
of mere outward appearance and show,
but a church of Christlike character,
a church of and for all people,
a church of the margins as well as the centre,

to bear with difficult circumstances
in your service, Lord;
give us the wit and wisdom

our own belief that we are right,
that we are not open
to being apprehended by you, Lord.

to impose on others
burdens that you do not require.
