Keep us, Lord,
engaged in our journey of faith,
attentive to your leading and guiding,
enthused by the mission of your kingdom,
encouraged by your presence and your promises.
May we never be indifferent
to the invitation you offer,
that we may rejoice
in your love.

the way of life and truth,

John the Baptist, Lord,
remind us that even when
we are held captive
in prisons of others’ making,
or feel captives of choices
we have made ourselves,
we are never without your presence,
never away from your love.
Help us to know and live your peace.

and for whatever reason we are there,
encourage and enable us
to be envoys of your gospel,
bearers of your love,

Give us a heart
for the wellbeing

to be open to the work of your Spirit
in our lives and in the lives of others;

convict us and convince us
of the great truth that all people,
whomever and wherever they are,

in your kingdom

first encountered you,
he thought that nothing good
could come from Nazareth;
yet in knowing you,
his outlook was changed.
Change us by your presence,

that like Paul, Cornelius, and Peter,
we may be ready to hear you
teach us things that change

what we know and like;

are open to your working in our lives,
to your invitation to be part
of the story of your love.

to deepen and develop our discipleship,
to contemplate and concentrate upon
your call to community;
keep our focus away
from the golden calf

with joy in what your love has done for us,

that beset the early church,
and which has been a temptation
to your people ever since;

not only to understand
but to experience human life;
seen in your patience with us

our philosophical proofs,
or our clever conversations
for demonstrations of your divinity,
but rather to the impact of your love
manifest in our lives,
channeling the blessings
of your kingdom

to share the good news of your love
with a world that needs so badly to hear it.
Set us free
to shine the light of your gospel
into the darkness which binds so many.

to share the life of your kingdom
with all who crave peace and hope.

Turn our hearts away
from greed and self-service,
that we may gladly and generously
offer all that we are and all that we have,
to each other and to you;

not only to speak
the simple truth
of your love to the world,
but to show it in
the attitudes and actions of our lives,

sometimes to climb a mountain with you,
where you give us glimpses of your glory,

Help us to be ready also
for the journey through hard valleys,
conscious too of your presence

that so often,
when we pick
what we think is best,
when we choose
what feels right for us,
when we employ our wisdom
in making decisions,
if we do so without prayer,
without your leading,
we are apt to be wrong.

built on your grace working in us,
growing our understanding
of ourselves, of each other, and of you.
Give us the steadfastness we need,
to meet one another
and the world’s issues and opportunities,
with your heart, your mind, your love.

Whatever we can offer
to help and assist others, Lord,
whether it be our time, our talents,
our treasures, our theories,
or even our theology,
let us never forget
to be open to you,
to your leading and guiding,
and to introduce people
to you, to your love and life.

Remind us, Lord,
when we read of
the joy and communality
of the early Church,
that this was their response to you
as they repented of their own ideas
and came to yours.
Give us the same focus
on being your people,
and keep us devoted to your will
more than our own.
