among us, Lord,
both in the crib
at Christmas
and at your
return in glory,
keep us watchful
and wakeful
to your presence
among us today;
hold our hearts
ready to receive you
afresh this day,
and our lives ready
to reveal you
to the world.

may your light

your calling

on our Advent journey;

guides us in our
pilgrimage of faith,

that we may perceive

We see, Lord,
the turmoil
of nations,
their people,

earth itself.
Bring us up short
by the realisation
of our failure
to care properly
for one another,

we inhabit;

a yearning
for right

for justice,

Every day, Lord,
we see the difference
between the way
the world is,
and the way
it ought to be.
We see it
in the lives
of nations,
communities,
groups,
and people.
Inspire and
guide us
to work for
the blessings
we long to see;

of equity

You promise, Lord,
that justice,
mercy and peace
will prevail.
Inspire us
to work in your name
to bring justice
into situations
of inequity,
to bring mercy
into the lives
of the oppressed,
to build peace
where there is
violence and division,
to reveal
your kingdom.

In our sinfulness, Lord,
we are tempted
to build our empires,
to exalt ourselves,
to worship gods
of wealth, status,
or power.
Open our eyes
to your kingdom,
to your light
and life
and love;
inspire us
to give of ourselves
for the blessing of others,
to your glory.

We live, Lord,
with turmoil and war,
greed and indifference,
unfairness, inequity
and sorrow,
but your justice
will prevail;
your love is
unstoppable.
Hear our prayer
for all nations,
for all with power
and authority;
may all
know you
as King,
and seek
your peace.

You call us, Lord,
to be focused
on your kingdom,
but also
to be incarnate
in your world.
As we seek
to follow your ways
and to do your will,
keep our feet
firmly on the ground,
engaged in
the realities
of daily life,
shining your light,
sharing your love,

Lord, keep us
true to you;
your Gospel,
your kingdom,
your love.
Let us not
be distracted
by the rhetoric,
the ‘haughty words
and blasphemies’,
of those who
serve themselves
and seek power
for its own sake.
Keep our focus
on the common good,
on the blessing of all.

Remind us, Lord,
that although
hatred and oppression,
greed and injustice,
violence and death
continue to blight life
for so many,
they cannot prevail;
Remind us
that your love
is stronger;
inspire us
to confront
darkness
with your light,
confident that
love wins.

The nations rage, Lord,
and we yearn
for your peace to come.
Encourage, enthuse, equip us
to work for that peace,
for justice and mercy,
for love of our neighbour,
for the common good.
Turn hearts
from a desire for empire,
to a longing for your kingdom,
your love.

Lord, help us
to measure our lives
against your Gospel,
your call;
not so as to dwell
on our shortcomings
and feel inadequate,
but to know
your challenge
and inspiration
to become
more and more
Christlike
day by day.
Show us
your love;
inspire us
to show it
to all.

Give us, Lord,
a hunger
for your word:
may the words
of Scripture
and the words
of your Spirit,
lead us deeper
into relationship
with your Living Word,
in whom our hopes
are fulfilled.
May the sweetness

of discernment;

not just
the fleeting
satisfactions
of the world,

blessing
